Newington Temple’s beginnings were as a vaudeville cabaret club.

Described by circus impresario, Barnum, as ‘the smallest person that ever walked’, TOM THUMB made his first ever British public appearance in February 1844 in Liverpool.

Appearing initially for a one week residencey at both No 8 Newington during the day and evenings at the Theatre Royal, Church Street. Barnam’s prodigy performed ‘Depicting the Greek statues and Napoleon’ at the portico at No 8 Newington for the entry fee of sixpence. they stayed close by at a hotel at 106 bold street, where fans would gather and chase them down bold Street to Newington.

In celebration of Tom Thumb’s British debut at No 8 Newington, our lounge area is now christened ‘The Tom Thumb Lounge.’
